Start With What You Want the Trip to Feel Like

All four go to the same place. The coast west of Albufeira is a wall of ochre and cream limestone with arches, stacks and caves cut into it, and Benagil is the famous one at the far end. What separates the trips is the boat under you.

The honest split runs like this. If anyone in the group gets seasick, dislikes spray, or wants to sit down with a rail and a toilet, the catamaran is the answer and the ten-minute swim stop is the bonus. If the caves themselves are the point, the semi-rigid boat is the one that noses into the narrow ones the larger hulls cannot enter, and it carries a marine biologist alongside the skipper. If you want the fastest ride and the reassurance of the biggest review count in town, the 47-seat speedboat does that for the lowest price. And if you want to be the engine, the kayak is a two-hour paddle from Praia do Castelo with a swim stop at a beach you cannot reach on foot.

What Each One Costs and Where the Catch Is

The prices below are the lowest adult rate on the operators' own listings in USD, and they move with season and demand. The catch on each is not in the price, it is in the restrictions.

The semi-rigid boat is the strictest: no children under 5, no pregnant women, nobody over 120 kg, and nobody with back problems. The speedboat also bars pregnancy and back problems, though it takes wheelchairs. The kayak needs you to swim and excludes under-5s and anyone with mobility impairments. The catamaran is the one with almost no gate on it, which is exactly why it suits mixed groups.

What You Can No Longer Do

For years the Benagil cave was a place you could swim to from the beach 200 metres away, paddle into on a rented board, and stand on the sand under the roof opening. All three are now prohibited.

The National Maritime Authority, through the Port Captain of Portimão and in coordination with Lagoa Municipality, issued Edital 019/2024 covering navigation in the maritime area of the Benagil caves. Swimming into the cave has been banned since August 2024, with or without a float, armbands or any other aid. Nobody may disembark onto the sand inside, and that applies to tour companies as much as to individuals. Unguided kayak and SUP in the cave area is prohibited, so a board rented off the beach will not get you in.

The rules go further than access. There are caps on how many boats and kayaks may be inside at one time, guided kayak groups must run one guide kayak for every six visitor kayaks, and all maritime activity in the Benagil area stops between sunset and sunrise. Fines start at €300 for an individual and reach €216,000 for an operator under the Framework Law on Environmental Administrative Offences.

What Is Still Allowed, and What It Means for Your Booking

You can still go in. You go in aboard a licensed boat, or on a guided kayak or SUP tour with an operator that holds the licence. That is the whole list, and it is why booking through a platform with a named operator matters more here than it used to.

Two further limits apply on the day. Local regulations hold a boat inside the cave for only a few minutes, and in summer there is often a queue at the entrance while craft take turns. And when the swell builds, the Maritime Police close the cave outright: the boats then view it from the water outside, and no operator refunds for that, because the trip still ran. Read the cave as likely rather than guaranteed, and pick a calm morning if the forecast gives you the choice.

The Run West From the Marina

The boats leave Marina de Albufeira and turn west, and the coast starts working almost immediately. São Rafael comes first, then Praia do Castelo where the kayaks launch, then the long flat sand at Galé and the lagoon behind Salgados. Armação de Pêra marks the halfway point, and the cliffs get taller after it.

Nossa Senhora da Rocha sits on its headland with a chapel on top. Then the Natural Arch of Albandeira, a free-standing span of rock the boats slow down for, and Praia da Marinha, the beach that shows up on Algarve postcards more than any other. Benagil is the next inlet along. Inside, the sea has hollowed a chamber out of the cliff and punched a circular hole in its roof, and around midday the sun drops a column of light through it onto the sand. That is what everyone came to see, and light between 10am and 4pm is when it works.

Benagil sits closer to Carvoeiro and Lagoa than to Albufeira. The cave is roughly 30 km west of the marina by sea, which is why the round trip runs 2 to 2.5 hours, and Lagos is a further 40 minutes' drive beyond it. If you are staying in Albufeira, this is the trip. If you are staying in Lagos, a different set of boats gets you there faster.

The Dolphins, Honestly

Bottlenose and common dolphins work this coast all year, and two of the four trips carry a marine biologist whose job is finding them and explaining what you are looking at. Crews want the sighting as much as you do.

They are wild animals. Every operator states plainly that sightings are not guaranteed and that there is no refund if none appear, and the reviews back that up: plenty of five-star write-ups end with a line about not seeing any. Treat a dolphin as the bonus and the coastline as the trip, and you will not be disappointed on the day.

Wind, Timing and Seasickness

Prevailing Algarve winds build through the afternoon. The surface picks up short chop and the fast boats throw spray, so an afternoon sailing is a wetter, bumpier trip than the same boat at ten in the morning. Waterproof layers are worth carrying even in August, and if anyone in the group is prone to seasickness, book the morning and take the catamaran.

Summer sailings sell out. The morning slots go first, and operators add departures when the forecast holds rather than in advance, so a full calendar three days out is not the same as no availability.

• Bring: swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses and a waterproof layer
• Leave behind: large bags, glass, anything you would mind getting wet
• Be early: the marina is 2 km west of the Old Town, and every operator wants you there before the stated time
• Parking: the Marina underground car park, or Giro line 3 from the Old Town
• Cancellation: all four cancel free up to 24 hours before and take no payment at booking

When in the Year to Go

The boats run through the season and thin out in winter, and the difference between months is bigger than the temperature suggests. June to September is dry: July averages 1 mm of rain and a 29.1°C high, sailings run all day and every operator is at full schedule. That is also when the cave queues and the morning slots sell out days ahead.

April, May and October are the value months. Air temperatures sit between 20.7°C and 23.2°C, the sea is cooler than most people want for the swim stop, and you will share the cave with a fraction of the August traffic. Prices soften and the same boats run.

November to March is the gamble. December takes 96 mm of rain, the wettest month of the year, and while calm days still produce sailings, cancellations for sea conditions become routine and calendars thin. If a Benagil trip is the reason for the holiday, do not build a December week around it.

One pattern holds all year: book the first departure of the day. The wind builds through the afternoon on this coast in every season, and the cave sits at the far end of the run, so an afternoon boat takes the chop for an hour each way.

Going From Albufeira Versus Going From Benagil Itself

You can drive to Benagil village, about 45 minutes from Albufeira, and take a boat from the beach there. It is a shorter trip on the water and a cheaper ticket, and it comes with two problems: parking in Benagil is free but nearly impossible to find in summer, and the beach shuttles are small craft that give you the cave and almost nothing else.

The case for leaving from Albufeira is the 30 km of coastline in between. São Rafael, Castelo, Galé, Salgados, Armação de Pêra, Nossa Senhora da Rocha, the Albandeira arch and Praia da Marinha are the trip, and the cave is the turning point rather than the whole point. You also get the swim stop, the dolphin search and, on two of the four boats, a marine biologist explaining what is going past.

If you are staying in Albufeira, take the Albufeira boat. If you happen to be in Carvoeiro or Lagoa already, the local shuttles make sense. And if you are based in Lagos, 40 minutes' drive west of Benagil, book there instead: those boats reach the cave faster and pass Ponta da Piedade on the way.

Who Cannot Go

The restrictions differ per boat and they are not interchangeable. The semi-rigid boat excludes children under 5, pregnant women, people with back problems and anyone over 120 kg. The speedboat excludes pregnancy and back problems but is wheelchair accessible. The kayak excludes under-5s, pregnancy, non-swimmers and people with mobility impairments. The catamaran carries almost everyone.
